Live-Edge Entry Console

An entryway sets the tone for everything behind it, and this one needed a piece with presence but not bulk. We chose a single claro walnut slab with dramatic figure and a sweeping natural edge, then floated it on a minimal blackened-steel base so the wood does all the talking. At sixty inches it fills the wall without crowding the walk-through.

The slab was flattened with a router sled, then hand-planed to remove every machine track before finishing. We filled the few natural voids with a clear stabilizer rather than hiding them, because the character is worth keeping. A single drawer, dovetailed and set on wooden runners, keeps keys and mail out of sight, its front grain-matched so it nearly vanishes when closed. Six coats of hardwax oil bring out the chatoyance in the walnut, the way the figure shifts from honey to chocolate as you move past it. It is a quiet, confident first impression that will outlast every trend it sits beneath.
